The historic preservation ordinance is designed to:
- Assist in the implementation of the Downtown Master and the Historic Preservation plans
- Make historic landmark designation more difficult to accomplish
- Make demolition requests for newer structures easier to accomplish
- Provide the Historic Preservation Board increased authority to help preserve the historic integrity of the Craig and Gould neighborhood
- Establish a process for creating historic districts in the Craig and Gould neighborhood
- Eliminate the involuntary landmarking provision in the current ordinance
The new downtown zoning option will help strengthen the Interstate 25 interchange areas into the Town. This will help in attracting new businesses and assist in the goal of keeping Castle Rock a freestanding community. The regulations include:
- Eliminated parking requirements
- Improved pedestrian connectivity
- Increased building heights
- Allowing mixed use and potential to integrate housing in close proximity to employment and services
- Assist in the implementation of the Downtown Master and the Historic Preservation plans
“These two ordinances will be instrumental in helping us move forward with economic development while still maintaining the small-town character for which Castle Rock is known,” said Development Services Director Bill Detweiler.
Both ordinances are effective Aug. 27, 2010.
