The full moon can have a creepy connotation.
Next month in Castle Rock, however, it simply will be associated with adventure, as the first ever Pedal the Moon moonlight bike ride will be taking off.
The event will be held Saturday, Aug. 21, on the East Plum Creek Trail between The Meadows neighborhood and Downtown Castle Rock.
Town Parks and Recreation Senior Maintenance Technician John Jorgensen will be the
ride’s leader. Jorgensen got the idea for the ride his own late-night ride back in November.
He said this ride will be much warmer.
“Pedal the Moon is special, because it will take place under a full moon, and happen mostly away from city lights,” Jorgensen said. “Just you, and your bike and a full moon.”
Bicyclists of all ages and abilities are invited to join the ride. The round-trip distance will be about 6 miles, and the terrain is mostly flat.
All riders must wear a helmet and have a front headlamp and blinking rear light. Riders are encouraged to light and decorate their bikes. Prizes will be given for the best decorations.
Those wishing to ride must register by Saturday, Aug. 14. Registration can be completed at CRgov.com/moon or at the Castle Rock Recreation Center.
The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children age 12 and under and includes a T-shirt and post-ride snacks.
Riders should meet at 8:30 p.m. at the picnic pavilion at Butterfield Crossing Park,
3952 W. Butterfield Crossing Drive. The ride, which begins at 9 p.m., will advance south
to Downtown’s Festival Park before returning to Butterfield Park.
