Our Commitment to Animal Welfare and Carriage Ride Safety
As part of our annual holiday celebrations in Downtown Castle Rock, we are proud to partner with Kodiak Ranch to bring horse-drawn carriage rides to our community.
We know that our community cares deeply about animal well-being, and so do we. We take the safety, health, and comfort of the horses very seriously. Here is a closer look at how our draft horses are cared for, the standards we enforce, and why this seasonal tradition is managed with the utmost respect for the animals.
Life and Care at Kodiak Ranch
The draft horses that visit Downtown Castle Rock are owned and cared for by Kodiak Ranch, and here is a little about their life and care:
-
Rural Colorado Ranch Living: When they aren't visiting Downtown, these horses live out in wide-open country pastures on a rural Colorado ranch in Weld County. This is where they wake up, graze, and sleep throughout the year including on the days they visit Castle Rock.
-
Comprehensive Healthcare: They receive regular, specialized veterinary care, along with dedicated attention from equine care specialists.
-
A Light Work Schedule: The horses work primarily during the roughly one and a half month holiday season, supplemented by a few single-day events throughout the year. The rest of their time is spent resting, grazing, and engaging in light exercise on the ranch pasture to keep them healthy and active.
The Nature of Draft Horses
Draft horses—such as Percherons, Shires, and Clydesdales—were historically bred for strength, pull endurance, and outdoor work. Keeping working breeds active and engaged is essential for their physical health and mental well-being. Regular activity helps maintain their muscular health and overall vigor, while keeping them mentally stimulated.
Strict Local Protections & Built-In Rest
To ensure the horses are never over-worked or stressed during their time in Castle Rock, we maintain strict operational safeguards:
-
Rest After Every Single Ride: Each roughly 10-minute ride is allotted a full 20-minute time block, ensuring the horses receive a generous break after every single trip.
-
Strict Weight Limits: Rides are strictly limited by passenger weight to ensure the load is well within the horses' physical capacity.
-
Capped Hours: Rides are only offered 5 out of 7 days per week and are capped at 3-4 hours per night.
-
Seasonal & Weather Monitoring: Rides operate during cool winter months and are adjusted or paused in adverse conditions. The horses in Castle Rock only work less than 2 months out of the year during the holiday season, outside of intermittent events.
How Our Program Differs from Big City Environments
You may have seen reports or discussions about horse carriage operations in dense metropolitan cities like New York. Our program is fundamentally different:
-
Guaranteed Breaks vs. Continuous Labor: In major cities, carriage horses often work long, grueling shifts with little to no downtime. In Castle Rock, our horses work short 3 to 4 hour evenings, rest two full days a week, and receive break time after every ride during their shifts.
-
Pasture Living vs. Urban Stabling: Unlike horses kept in high-density city stalls in urban warehouses, Kodiak Ranch horses return home to live outdoors on open rural Colorado pasture land every day.
-
Suburban Environment: Downtown Castle Rock offers wider streets, lower traffic density, and clean air.
Transparent & Open Communication
We appreciate everyone in our community who reaches out with questions or concerns about animal care. We share your commitment to treating every animal with kindness and respect. If you have additional questions about our holiday carriage rides or Kodiak Ranch’s care practices, please feel free to reach out to our team.
